The Kennel Club has urged the Scottish Government to ban shock collars, citing “clear scientific evidence” of their ineffectiveness and detrimental effects on dogs.
KC’s Holly Conway said: “We are deeply disappointed that no meaningful steps have yet been taken. Shock collars are outdated and ineffective.”
However, Scottish dog trainers contacted by Sporting Gun disagree, with Charlie Thorburn of Mordor Gundogs calling the KC’s research “flawed, woke bull****”.
He cited a case where a shock collar prevented a dangerous flatcoat retriever from killing more sheep, after sustained obedience training hadn’t overcome the “red mist”.
He argued: “I can guarantee you I’ve saved dogs’ lives by using a shock collar.”
Mr Thorburn stressed shock collars should only be used as a last resort either by or under the supervision of experts who understand dog psychology.
All trainers contacted echoed Mr Thorburn’s opposition to an outright ban while calling for stronger regulation. The Scottish Government previously committed to public consultation on the issue but has not yet set a date.
