Built for shoot work: CFMOTO CFORCE 520 EPS tested

Managing a shoot means early mornings, heavy loads and rough terrain. The CFMOTO CFORCE 520 EPS proves you don’t need to spend five figures for a high-spec quad that’ll do the job.

This mid-range machine was tested extensively by Paul Austin across over 250km of hills, woods and moorland. The verdict? It’s tough, capable and excellent value for money.

Why a quad works for shoot managers

UTVs like the Polaris Ranger or CFMOTO UFORCE 600 are superb, but not always viable in tighter spots or tighter budgets. A quad gives you:

  • Narrower footprint for tricky gateways

  • Easier handling on muddy rides and woodland tracks

  • Low purchase price

  • Less to go wrong

Whether you’re feeding cover crops, towing behind the pens or accessing the high seat, the CFORCE 520 can do it all.

All the gear – and it’s standard

Unlike many rivals, the CFORCE 520 EPS includes key features as standard, saving you money from day one:

  • Speed-sensitive electric power steering

  • Towbar and 2in hitch

  • 1,134kg winch

  • Selectable 2WD/4WD and diff-lock

  • LED lighting, indicators, horn and mirrors

  • Composite front/rear racks (30kg/60kg)

  • Sealed rear toolbox (10.5 litres)

  • 5in LCD dash with USB and 12V socket

It even comes road-legal straight from the dealer.

Practical shoot-day performance

Off-road

Whether shifting feed or ferrying beaters and dogs to a drive, the CFORCE handled everything:

  • Excellent grip thanks to independent suspension

  • Smooth ride over churned-up field edges

  • Responsive low-range gearing for load carrying

Storage and kit

A few storage tweaks improve practicality for shoot days:

  • Add a rear cargo box for food, kit or pheasants

  • Use a front tray for feeders or bags

  • Carrying rifles? Use a Plano case or Vorn backpack

With good planning, this quad easily replaces a UTV in most countryside tasks.

Fuel economy and handling

MPG

Fuel use averaged 18mpg in hilly terrain. Flatland keepers might hit the advertised 24–25mpg.

Controls

  • Left-hand lever operates rear brakes only

  • Foot brake applies all four

  • Takes getting used to – especially on slopes

Ergonomics

Riders over 6ft may knock knees on the transmission tunnel on inclines. Manageable on the flat.

Add-ons worth considering

While the standard spec is generous, some add-ons help tailor it for gamekeeping:

  • Bumper protection pack (fitted to test model)

  • Heated grips – a must in winter

  • Rear cargo box – for feed, birds or gear

  • Front tray – ideal for dog transport cages or bins

  • Limiter removal – unlocks top speed for private land

Start basic and build it out as your needs evolve.

Why it’s a smart buy for keepers

If you’re managing a small syndicate, DIY shoot or commercial day, the CFORCE 520 EPS has the muscle and kit to support every task.

It’s not without minor niggles – fuel economy and braking layout take adjustment – but it delivers serious value and versatility. For gamekeepers working to a budget, it’s a real contender.
