January 08Vote for Countryside Alliance in C4 poll
The Countryside Alliance has been short-listed for the ‘Political Personality of the Decade’ award at the Channel 4 Political Awards, to be held towards the end of January. The initial list was compiled from nominations from the general public, and Channel 4 executives compiled the shortlist, which comprises:

Countryside Alliance boss Simon Hart says “This is a prestigious award and we are in interesting company! If we do well, then our campaigning effectiveness, especially in the context of repeal of the Hunting Act, will be greatly enhanced. If you think countryside interests should come out on top of those listed above, then please use your vote.”

Bird flu strikes in Dorset
10.01.08 – Defra has confirmed today that three wild mute swans have been found with the H5N1 strain of bird flu at Abbotsbury Swannery, a sanctuary located nine miles from Weymouth, Dorset.A Wild Bird Control Area (3km) and Monitoring Area (10km) have been established around the premises. The shooting of birds has been banned in the 3km and 10km zones while an investigation is carried out. Deer stalking and the shooting of mammals for pest control purposes can continue.
