Three Scout leaders have successfully qualified as BASC shotgun coaches, creating new opportunities for young people to access shooting sports
Three Scout leaders have successfully qualified as BASC shotgun coaches through a programme funded by the association’s Legacy Fund, creating new opportunities for young people to access shooting sports.
Richard Ruddick and Henson Appleby, from Gravesham District Scouts in Kent, passed their final assessments at The Game Fair, joining Stuart Hufton, an Explorer Scout leader from Derbyshire, who qualified at the National Shooting Show in May.
The initiative, launched in September 2022 with £26,000 from BASC’s Legacy Fund, subsidises training costs for Scout leaders. The three-day shotgun coaching course, normally £750, is available to Scout leaders for just £150.
So far 53 Scout leaders have accessed funding to become either shotgun coaches or airgun instructors. BASC’s head of training Peter Marshall says that funds remain available for additional Scout leaders to join the programme, creating a “win-win” that enhances shooting opportunities for young people nationwide.
