The Countryman Challenge takes place on the weekend of 1-2 August. This brand new event is based on a new discipline called Country Sporting, invented for people who enjoy shooting shotguns and rifles in the field, and smash a few clays for fun.
The clay targets are thrown in a completely new way, with no ‘loopers’ or ‘battues’, just targets that replicate real quarry species – such as decoyed pigeon, driven pheasant or walked-up snipe – all coming at you at random.
The clays will be thrown as simultaneous or following pairs, controlled by an electronic release to make sure everyone has the same time to reload between pairs. Competitors will still shoot from cages but in order to replicate ‘the real thing’, one will be a fully equipped pigeon hide; another will offer the chance to tackle bolting rabbits from the back of a 4x4!
As well as the eight shotgun stands, there will be four air rifle layouts, using the new Promatic Sharpshooter remote controlled systems, each of which will offer ten targets in a natural and challenging way. If you don’t have an air rifle, or just want to try something new, Air Arms will have some precharged rifles available to use on each stand.
There are five classes, Juniors (Under 16s), Parent & Child, Ladies, Pro and Open. To give everyone a chance of winning a prize, any clay shooters who are, or have ever been, registered at Classes A-AAA must shoot in the Pro class for their own separate prize fund, while in the Open Class there are prizes down to tenth place.
Practice stands will feature a Caesar Guerini pool shoot where you can try out shotguns from the marque, as well as a Running Boar simulator. There are ‘have a go’ stands for air rifles and shotguns so everyone has a chance to pull the trigger. Sporting Shooter’s game chef Mark Gilchrist will be on hand to provide top quality nosh – from game pie and salad to venison sausage baps and free-range egg and sausage breakfast rolls helping to sustain those making the most of the free camping during the weekend. BASC will be on site, along with several other trade stands, and resident gunshop Tower Gun.
